The Future Prospects of Kraft Paper Bags

The advent of kraft paper bags changed the traditional mindset that shopping volume was limited to the amount of items one could carry in one hand. It also freed consumers from the worry of not being able to carry everything, thus enhancing the shopping experience. While it might be an exaggeration to say that the birth of kraft paper bags propelled the entire retail industry, it at least revealed to businesses that until the customer's shopping experience becomes as comfortable, easy, and convenient as possible, it's impossible to predict exactly how much a consumer will buy. This very fact led to a greater emphasis on the consumer shopping experience and spurred the development of supermarket shopping baskets and trolleys.
For the next half-century, the development of kraft paper shopping bags was remarkably smooth. Improvements in the material increased their load-bearing capacity, and their appearance became increasingly refined. Manufacturers printed various trademarks and designs on kraft paper bags, which then entered shops and stores throughout the streets and alleys. Until the mid-20th century, the emergence of plastic shopping bags marked another major revolution in the history of shopping bags. Its advantages-lighter, stronger, and cheaper to manufacture-made the once-popular kraft paper bag pale in comparison. Subsequently, plastic bags became the preferred choice for daily consumption, while kraft paper bags gradually faded into the background. Ultimately, the now-obsolete kraft paper bag could only be used in the packaging of a few skincare products, clothing, books, and audio-visual products under the guise of "nostalgia," "naturalness," and "environmental protection."

However, with the global rise of the "anti-plastic" movement, environmentalists have begun to turn their attention back to the old-fashioned kraft paper bag. Starting in 2006, McDonald's China gradually implemented the use of insulated kraft paper bags in all its stores to hold takeout food, replacing the use of plastic food bags. This initiative was also positively received by other businesses; Nike, Adidas, and other former major consumers of plastic bags began to use high-quality kraft paper bags to replace plastic shopping bags.
